Are You a Foodie?
How do you feel about the word foodie?
Go anywhere right now on social media or in your favourite restaurant and you will find someone taking photos of food or at least one person who has gone to the restaurant to check out the menu and sample it. What crossed your mind when you saw them? Did you immediately think… ohh that’s a foodie!
And what made you jump quickly to that title? And would you consider yourself a foodie now that you are also in a restaurant and sampling a menu especially if it just launched!
The term Foodie was coined with the growth of social media and the need to belong or identify with a specific niche. Its basic definition is someone who loves all things food! One who has an interest in food as a hobby rather than just a necessity. Paul levy coined the term Foodie describing them as people who Elevate all foods to the sacrament and is very very interested in Food.
In my quest to identify with Foodie I went on a journey of self discovery to find out what kind of a foodie I am if there is anything like that. And to my surprise, I found out a whole load of categories of the types of foodies that exist. I narrowed mine into four broad categories. And here it goes.
We have the
- The photographer Foodie.
With the emerges of smart phones and the culture of social media this is the most common foodie you will come across. They are always ready to take a snap of their food orders before they can dive in and presentation is their thing. They will then edit the photos accordingly and post them on their socials with a lose term as ”….food photo dump for today…”
- Adventurous foodie.
This one here loves to go to restaurants to check out new kinds of food and the cultures behind them. They are keen to study the new and upcoming food spots and especially with they are themed restaurants either by location of influence or culture.
They will not hesitate to ask for a dish even though it doesn’t align with their taste buds. They then jump onto their socials and give a loose description of what they ordered and a quick overview of the menu without really going into details.
- Creative foodie.
This one right here is one who is keen on food, and all things taste, ingredients and presentation. They want to indulge in food and see what wets their food taste buds and creativity. They then go back to their kitchens and spend their time coming up with a similar dish or trying to put their spin to the dish trying out with different ingredients. They also tend to be some of the most talented cooks around.
- Knowledgeable foodie.
This one right here is one that thrives on all thing’s food, and I mean all things food! You will not be quick to notice them as they thrive in anonymity. They delve into the food history behind the dish, who first cooked it, why the ingredients of the dish matter, what combinations make the food stand out, what molecules were combined in the making of that dish… I could go on and on but am sure you get the drift! They literally obsess over every small detail of the dish. These kinds of foodie go a step further and become the gurus of food writing, the critics, and they end up influencing the kinds of food journals and restaurants that are awarded and the chefs literally worth their salt. This right here are the real influencers if a may say so myself, but I digress!
That said , I believe most of us out here are foodies as we are all pulled into food either through flavour, likes and dislikes, and food as a necessity.
